The Center for Prevention and Disease Control (CDC) in the U.S., recommend testing all women with symptoms of vaginal infection by studying the characteristics of vaginal discharge in them. Different vaginal infections, but the most common are bacterial vaginosis (BV), trichomoniasis and candida vulvovaginitis (CV).

All women who have any of these types of infection, should see their doctor for telling them the best treatment they should receive, as otherwise described infectious problems can develop persistence, or develop lesions in the cervix, perhaps the most common of these is the ulceration, which can then evolve to the formation of an ectropion (protrusion of the cervix associated with infection by viruses or bacterias. The indication of proper treatment by a medical specialist or experienced in the treatment of vaginal infections, is possibly the most important action for the effective control of these problems.

Some of the recommended treatments for patients with bacterial vaginosis are metronidazole or clindamycin vaginal cream.

It is important to remember that the submission of clindamycin vaginal cream may weaken latex condoms and vaginal diaphragms, which can jeopardize the protection for these methods, both when used as contraceptives, as when used for the prevention of sexually transmitted infections. Uncomplicated Candida Vulvovaginitis is relatively easy to treat with topical medications applied in short time schedules. Most of them achieved an improvement of symptoms in 80 to 90% of patients.

The persistence of symptoms or the recurrence of an infectious event within the first two months after administration of a treatment, is an absolute indication to go with the medical specialist to evaluate the case and that this establishes the diagnosis or reason for prior treatment failure and the indication of new treatments. Women who self-medicate have a very high rate of treatment failure has been administered.

The most common complications of untreated infections such time properly and are the possibility of injury or neck injury, given a cervicovaginitis Candida, or persistence of infection or progression to recurrent infection.
