This complete right hemicolectomy is “the first of its kind in the world, as in the international literature has not reported any case of gastrointestinal cancer pathology”, says Salvador Morales Conde, coordinator of the Laparoscopic Surgery Unit, responsible for this pioneering intervention. The patient, a man of 59 years, started a liquid diet the second day of the operation and was discharged from hospital four days later.

The single-port laparoscopic method, or single port, reduces surgical insult, since it reduces to a single inlet and outlet boarding place for surgeons. The navel is the perfect opening to introduce optical scalpel without need for additional incisions in the abdomen.

“Additional benefits of this technique over traditional laparoscopic surgery are a potential decreased postoperative pain, less trauma to the abdominal wall and a better cosmetic result, besides being able to avoid possible complications associated with additional trocars, such as bleeding wall the bleeding vessel damage or epigastric hernia, “says Morales Conde.

The intervention was resolved in just 140 minutes, although the section of the tumor specimen and the anastomosis of the colon were performed intracorporeally. Another aspect that contributed to the completion of this surgery has been instrumental flexible traction used for boarding. In this sense, Laparoscopic Surgery Unit is involved in a technology development project with several international companies to create different knives that can help improve surgery in the future.
