What is Alzheimer’s disease?

Alzheimer’s disease is a form of dementia that causes brain cells to deteriorate. As this disease progresses, it begins to affect the person’s memory and cognitive function. Alzheimer’s disease typically occurs in older people, but it has been diagnosed in patients under the age of 40.

What causes Alzheimer’s disease?

Scientists have not been able to pinpoint the exact cause of Alzheimer’s disease, but they have found several factors that can increase a person’s risk of developing this condition. Below are some of the risk factors associated with this condition:

*Age*. Studies have shown that a person’s risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease doubles every five years after the age of 65.

*Family history*. People who have a first-degree relative with Alzheimer’s are much more likely to develop it themselves.

*Sex*. Women generally live longer than men and that makes them more susceptible to developing Alzheimer’s disease.

*General health history.* People who have other health problem such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes are more likely to develop this condition. Additionally, those who smoke are also at an increased risk for developing this condition.

What are some of the most common symptoms associated with Alzheimer’s disease?

Increased forgetfulness is one of the first symptoms noticed in people with Alzheimer’s disease. Other symptoms that a person may notice include: wandering, depression, mood swings, social withdrawal and changes in sleeping habits.

What are some potential complications of Alzheimer’s disease?

Alzheimer’s disease will only continue to get worse if it is left untreated. People with this condition often have difficulty swallowing. As a result, food may get into the lungs and that can lead to pneumonia. Urinary incontinence is also common among Alzheimer’s patients. Additionally, people with Alzheimer’s are also more likely to suffer a serious injury from falls.

How is Alzheimer’s disease diagnosed?

A doctor will perform tests that check the patient’s coordination, balance, muscle tone and strength and reflexes. Neuropsychological testing is also an important part of diagnosing Alzheimer’s disease. This type of testing gives the physician details about a person’s mental function compared to other people who are the same age. A CT or MRI may also be order to get a better view of the brain.

What are some treatment options available for Alzheimer’s disease?

Alzheimer’s disease is a frustrating condition, but fortunately there are many treatment options available. A doctor may prescribe a class of medications called Cholinesterase inhibitors. These medications work by increasing the communication of the brain cells.Memantine (Namenda) is another one of the most commonly prescribed medications to treat Alzheimer’s disease. This medication also works by increasing the communication that goes on between the cells.

Exercise can also benefit those who have Alzheimers disease. Studies have shown that 30 minutes of exercise per day can help improve cognitive function. Diet can also help boost a person’s cognitive function. Fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants that help promote brain health.

Omega 3 fatty acids, which are a nutrient that is found in fish oil, have also been shown to produce cognitive function. The easiest way to get the recommended intake of omega 3 fatty acids is to eat two-three servings of fish per week. People who do not like fish can take a supplement. Additionally, researchers have also found that engaging in intellectually-stimulating activities can help preserve cognitive functioning.Nursing homes offer such opportunities on a regular basis.

This disease is very common especially in old age, it begins to manifest with occasional forgetfulness that over time become more frequent and unconscious speech. It is a bad progressive and irreversible, if recognized early symptoms can be treated, improving the quality of life of patients.

This disease has three stages:

You can not specify exactly when triggered, but progressive forgetfulness begins with things and situations, confusion about directions, decisions and money management. The patient is spontaneous does not own initiative, it is repetitive in their actions, the mood suddenly changes, becomes disoriented in time and space and began to suffer difficulties in language.

In the second stage, the disease is aggravated and start to ignore friends and family, not held in memory of new experiences, wanders, comes and goes without knowing it, have anxiety, muscle spasms, difficulty expressing their thoughts, and often gets edgy and nervous. Also becomes careless, confused, regarding himself and his health, can not live alone, cooking, cleaning, or shopping, is losing even in his own home, start seeing or hearing things that do not exist and appears incontinence.

In the third stage, late in the disease, the patient is very dependent on the caregiver, memory problems are really serious, and it becomes obvious physical deterioration. Lose weight despite a good diet, can not perform any daily activity, communicates little or nothing from their loved ones, loses the ability to walk, sleep enough, and is likely to get all kinds of infections, especially respiratory.

New scientific evidence suggests that pomegranate, pomegranate juice has three times more antioxidants needed for good health, the foods richest known them for excellence that are green tea and red wine.

Pomegranates are full of antioxidants and today have become more popular than ever in the U.S. and quoted in newspapers and magazines such as (Time and Vogue), by its dramatic effects on health.

Now, the pomegranate is well known in the food industry as a “super-fruit” along with blueberries and berries, which have also been positioned as medicinal food.

In addition to the antioxidants that are supplies of energy with which the body defends against free radicals that can cause degenerative diseases and premature aging, pomegranate juice has been linked to reducing bad cholesterol (HDL) and a variety of heart-healthy effects, which has a direct relationship with the imbalance of cholesterol.

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published a study linking lower levels of cellular oxidation in men, with the benefits of drinking pomegranate juice a day, which adds the protection of the state of their arteries, bad cholesterol responsible of abnormal thickening.

Pomegranates may also help fight Alzheimer’s disease by stimulating brain function and some studies say it can prevent skin cancer, prostate and destroy breast cancer cells.

It is estimated that one in 20 people between 50 and 70 years suffer from this disease. For those older than 85, the number affected is 20 percent, and it is estimated that this figure will increase due to increased life expectancy in developed countries.

It is a slowly progressive disease, characterized by a progressive dementia with memory loss, decreased ability to perform routine tasks, difficulties in trials, disorientation, personality changes and loss of skills language.

At first, the person has difficulty learning and retaining new information. Then she begins to lose memory and has trouble remembering people and events of childhood or youth. Then other symptoms, such as aphasia, which is the difficulty in expressing thoughts through language.

Another symptom is what is called agnosia, which is difficulty interpreting familiar faces or objects known. The patient can not manage money or remember to take medicine, for example. It also tends to lose the sense of direction and ignores how to get home in case of going for a walk. Anyway, in the early stages of the disease may be feeding, bathing and dressing without help. But the personality changes, irritability, anxiety or depression, can cause serious problems in relationships with family and friends.

In more advanced stages, patients may experience hallucinations and irrational thoughts, and believe they are persecuted or that someone wants to steal their belongings.

Diet may play a role in Alzheimer’s disease. Results of recent studies have led researchers to consider a possible theory that high protein diets could leave neurons more vulnerable to Alzheimer’s plaques.

A study led by Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York (USA) found in mice, a link between a diet high in protein and Alzheimer’s disease. The findings are published in the journal Molecular Neurodegeneration.

The researchers evaluated four different menus in a transgenic mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease, which were fed a normal diet, a diet high in fat, low carbohydrate, high protein diet, low carbohydrate or a high option carbohydrates and low in fat.

Then the researchers examined the brain and body weight of mice and the accumulation of plaques and the differences in the structure of several brain regions involved in memory problems that occur in Alzheimer’s disease.

The mice were fed a diet high in protein, low carbohydrate had brains five percent lighter than the other and the regions of hippocampus were less developed. The result was a surprise to researchers and until proved this effect in non-transgenic mice is not clear whether brain mass loss associated with Alzheimer’s plaques.

However, the results of recent studies led the authors to consider a possible theory that high protein diets could leave neurons more vulnerable to Alzheimer’s plaques. The mice ate a high fat diet had higher levels of plaque proteins but this had no effect on plaque burden.

According says Sam Gandy, director of the study, “given the well-known association of high protein diet with the neurotoxicity associated with age, one wonders whether particular diets, when consumed at certain ages, may increase susceptibility to incidence or progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

The researchers note that the only way to answer this approach is to conduct more clinical trials on diet. “The project would be a challenge but might be worth if there were any probability that the ravages of Alzheimer’s may slow down or avoided through a healthy diet. These trials will be needed if scientists want to make specific recommendations about the risks of the diet in Alzheimer’s.
