Are opticians worried that laser eye surgery will make glasses obsolete one day? Not yet, but with new advances being made, one day everyone could be a candidate for corrective eye surgery. Laser eye surgery is recommended for everyone. Pregnant women and nursing mothers are not suitable candidates for laser eye surgery, nor is anyone with autoimmune diseases, HIV or diabetes.

Most clinics will not perform laser eye surgery on anyone under 18 or 21 years of age. Children under the age of 18 are not allowed to have LASIK surgery performed because the eye is still growing and changing. Unfortunately, children, who usually dislike wearing glasses, will have little choice but to keep visiting opticians. Many children cannot wear contacts either because they play sports.

Also, the natural aging process is unavoidable. A person who has laser eye surgery may still need reading glasses later on. It may take longer to need reading glasses, but the surgery will not keep a person from ever needing glasses again. Eye glasses and contacts will never be obsolete but in a few years, the only people who will be wearing them will be those who are not suitable candidates for corrective eye surgery, those who still can’t afford surgery, and  individuals who simply prefer the look of glasses or the ability to change their eye color with contacts lenses.
